Metal Roofing Across Tomball
Standing seam and exposed fastener panels for northwest Harris County, from acreage shops and barndominiums off Hufsmith Road to the master planned streets where the roof has to clear the neighborhood standards first.
What Metal Does Well Here, and What It Does Not
A straight read on panels, heat, hail, wind and pine needles in northwest Harris County.
Most people call us about metal for one of two reasons. Either they are done replacing a composition roof every time a hailstorm crosses 2920, or they are building something on acreage and metal was always the plan. Both are good reasons. What we try to do before anyone signs is separate the parts of the pitch that hold up on a Tomball roof from the parts that get repeated because they sound good. Metal is a long roof, it sheds well, and it handles our summers better than asphalt does. It is also unforgiving of a sloppy install, and it is the wrong call on some houses.
Faith Roofing Group works across Tomball and the surrounding 77375 and 77377 area, from the historic core out to the pasture lots on the north and west edges. We are based up in Huntsville and run crews down this way regularly. If you want to see finished work before you call anybody, there are metal jobs in the project gallery.
The Shop and the House Are Not the Same Decision
Standing seam and exposed fastener get talked about as good and better. They are really two different tools, and on a property with both a house and a shop we routinely quote both.
- Standing seam. Vertical panels with raised seams and clips hidden under the metal, so nothing punches through the water plane. It belongs on the house, and on any roof with real valleys and penetrations to work around.
- Exposed fastener. Screwed through the face of the panel. Economical, fast, and honest on a shop, a barn or an equipment cover with long clean runs. The screws and their rubber washers are the maintenance item, and somebody needs to check them.
- Stamped metal profiles. Worth pricing when the neighborhood expects the look of a shingle roof and you still want metal underneath the look.
Heat, and What a Reflective Finish Actually Buys You
A light or reflective finish sends a real share of the summer sun back off the roof instead of letting the deck soak it up, and on most Tomball homes that shows up as a cooler attic through August and September. It does not fix an attic that cannot breathe. We have walked houses where the soffit vents were painted shut years ago and the ridge had almost no exhaust, and no panel on the market was going to solve that. We look in the attic before we talk about colors, because the ventilation is usually the cheaper half of the fix.
Hail Behavior, and the Word Nobody Says
Spring hail runs through this part of Harris County often enough that it drives most of our phone traffic. Here is the behavior, plainly. A metal panel in a hailstorm that would strip a tired composition roof of its granules almost always stays watertight. What metal can do is dent, more so on thinner gauges and on the wide flat part of a panel, and a roof that sheds water perfectly can still have marks in it that you notice from the driveway. Heavier gauge helps. A textured or striated panel hides it better than a smooth one. How your policy treats denting that is cosmetic is a conversation for your carrier, and we will hand you photos and documentation for that file either way. When hail does open a roof up, storm damage repair is a separate call.
Pines, Valleys and the Debris Nobody Plans For
Loblolly pines cover most of these neighborhoods and they drop needles twice a year. On metal, the needles mostly slide, which is one of the quiet advantages over shingle around here. Mostly. Valleys still pack, low slope porch sections still hold a mat of needles against the trim, and gutters still fill. If the trees hang over the roof, plan on a look every fall regardless of what the panel is made of, and get the gutters sized for the water this roof will move.
How a Tomball Metal Job Runs
Four steps, from the first walk to the last magnet pass.
Walk It, Read the Rules
We measure the roof, get in the attic to look at ventilation and decking, and find out whether the property sits inside a subdivision. If it does, we ask you to pull the current architectural guidelines from your association so we are quoting something you can actually put up.
Panel, Profile, Color
Samples in hand, at your house, in daylight. We go through gauge, profile and finish, what each one costs to run on your roof, and which ones tend to clear neighborhood review. The shop and the house get quoted separately when they call for different systems.
Tear Off and Install
Old roof off, deck inspected and repaired where it is soft, high temperature underlayment down, extra membrane in the valleys and around every penetration. Then panels, custom flashing, tightened fastening at the edges and corners, and ridge ventilation that actually exhausts.
Clean Up and Hand Off
Magnet sweep of the drive and yard, debris hauled, and a walk of the roof with you before we leave. You get photos and the paperwork for your file, plus a first maintenance check on the calendar so nothing sits unlooked at.
Tomball Metal Roofing Questions
The five we get asked most, answered the way we would answer them on your driveway.
Can I put a metal roof on a house in a Tomball subdivision?
Sometimes, and the honest answer is that your homeowners association decides, not us. Many of the master planned neighborhoods around 77375 and 77377 were written with architectural standards that assume a composition roof, and some of those documents predate the stamped metal profiles now on the market. Ask your association for the current guidelines in writing before you settle on a panel. If your property sits on acreage outside a subdivision, that whole conversation usually goes away.
Standing seam or exposed fastener for a shop or barndominium?
For a shop, a barn, or a working barndominium, exposed fastener panels are usually the right call and we will say so. The panel is screwed straight through the face, the material cost is lower, and on a simple gable with long clean runs it does its job for a long time as long as somebody checks the fasteners every few years. Standing seam earns its keep on the house side, where the seams sit above the water line, the clips are hidden, and nobody is climbing up to retighten screws.
Will a metal roof keep my Tomball house cooler in summer?
A reflective finish sends a good share of the sun back off the roof instead of letting it soak into the deck, and on most homes here that shows up as a cooler attic in August. What it will not do is fix an attic that is short on ventilation or insulation. We have seen homeowners pay for a light colored panel and get less than they hoped because the soffit vents were painted shut and the ridge had nowhere to breathe. We look at the attic before we talk about color.
How does metal hold up in a hurricane or a straight line wind event?
Wind does not usually pull a metal roof off through the middle of a panel. It gets under an edge and peels from there. So the parts we care about most are the perimeter: the eave and rake metal, how that trim is fastened, and how tight the clip or screw spacing runs in the corners and along the edges where uplift is worst. A roof installed with the same generous spacing at the rake as in the open field is the one that comes apart. The local building department sets what the permit requires and we build to it.
Are metal roofs loud when it rains?
That reputation comes from panels screwed to open purlins over a barn, with nothing between the metal and the air inside. A residential metal roof goes over solid decking with underlayment, insulation and a ceiling below it, and most people tell us it sounds about like the roof they had before. If the room underneath is a vaulted addition or a converted attic with little insulation, you will hear more weather, and that is worth knowing before we start rather than after.
Metal Roof Work Around Tomball
Old Town, the master planned neighborhoods, and the acreage on the north and west edges.
Where We Work
We install metal roofing throughout Tomball and the surrounding stretch of northwest Harris County, on houses near the historic core, on subdivision homes across the 77375 and 77377 area, and on shops, barns and barndominiums out on the acreage. If a metal roof is not the right answer for your house, we will tell you that and price the alternative instead. Same crew handles roof repair and full roof installation here, so nothing gets handed off.
