- Fine stainless micro-mesh: the only category that reliably keeps needles out of the trough. Needles still mat on top, but a blower from the roof clears the surface, which beats digging out a packed gutter.
- Reverse-curve covers: water follows the nose into the slot and so do wet needles. Under pines the slot loads and the run starts sheeting over the front.
- Foam inserts: the worst option here. Needles drive into the foam, hold moisture against the metal, and the insert turns into a sponge.
- Brush inserts: needles weave into the bristles and stay. Cleaning means pulling every section out by hand.
- Wide-slot metal screens: cheap and easy to lift, but needle-width openings pass needles straight through into the trough.

Do gutter guards actually work under pine trees?
Some do, most do not. Fine stainless micro-mesh is the only style we install with confidence under a loblolly canopy, and even that needs the surface blown off, because needles mat on top of anything. Should gutters go on before or after a new roof?

Tear-off day is also the only time the fascia is fully exposed. If your gutters are newer and still functional we work around them during a roof replacement. If they are sagging, leaking, or too small for the roof, replacing them in the same visit saves a second mobilization.
