Gutters fail for a lot of reasons, but undersizing is one of the most common and least discussed. A gutter that’s too small for the roof surface it drains will overflow reliably during heavy rain regardless of how clean it is, how well it’s sloped, or how sound the hangers are. How gutter sizing actually works
Gutter sizing is based on two factors: the drainage area of the roof surface being captured and the design rainfall intensity for the region. Drainage area isn’t just the footprint of the house. It includes the pitch of the roof, which effectively increases the drainage area because a steeper pitch captures more of the rainfall that falls on it. A steeply pitched roof with a large horizontal footprint has a significantly larger effective drainage area than the same footprint at a low pitch.

- Overflow at gutter ends rather than downspouts. Water should exit through the downspout, not pour over the end cap. If overflow is concentrated at gutter terminations, the gutter is draining the wrong direction or lacks sufficient fall toward the downspout location.
- Foundation moisture or wet crawl space after rain. This is the end-state consequence of chronic gutter overflow.
